It’s breast cancer awareness month, and while early detection has helped saved countless lives, more work needs to be done to successfully treat metastatic breast cancer. Our own Qihong Huang discusses what his lab is doing to meet the challenges posed by metastatic breast cancer and what is happening at a genetic level. One sordid tale about Wistar that has persisted over the years is that a clumsy lab assistant dropped and destroyed the brain of one of America’s most influential and famous poets, Walt Whitman. We’re speaking with Dr. Brian Burrell of the University of Massachusetts who is going to tell us about the fascination of preserving brains and what really happened to Walt Whitman’s brain. On this month's episode of The Wistar Institute Podcast, we’re talking about SPORE, which stands for Special Program of Research Excellence. Wistar’s Dr. Meenhard Herlyn, who is the Caspar Wistar Professor of Melanoma Research, is leading scientific studies that will be funded through a $12.1 million SPORE grant from the National Cancer Institute. Wistar will be collaborating with the University of Pennsylvania on ground breaking skin cancer research. Dr. Herlyn is with us to discuss the SPORE grant and the project goals over the next five years. It’s also time to start thinking about the flu. We’re talking with Dr. Scott Hensley, an assistant professor in Wistar’s vaccine center, about the parallels between ebola and seasonal flu as well as the need for getting your children vaccinated, even at early ages.
